11 Muscle energy techniques / Leon Chaitow ; with contribution from Craig Liebenson ; foreword by Donald R. Murphy ; illustrated by Graeme Chambers Churchill Livingstone 2001 WE140 C435m 2001 Advanced bookpic Dana J. Lawrence Muscle energy technique (MET) is used predominantly by the osteopathic profession. However, it has not been widely accepted outside that profession, and texts discussing it are hard to come by. This book will go a long way toward alleviating that problem. It discusses in great detail the background and use of MET; additionally, it provides a chiropractic overview by adding a chapter by Dr. Craig Liebenson, who has done much to bring such techniques to the attention of the chiropractic profession. The book places a great deal of emphasis upon soft tissue treatment, and a substantial amount of space is given over the treatment considerations. Its goal is to provide an overview of soft tissue dysfunction and how they can lead to other problems, to discuss assessment and diagnosis of such problems, provide information on the use of MET and its variations in treating those conditions and especially for trigger point problems, and to suggest patient self-application methods. This is directed at osteopaths and physical therapists as well as other manual medicine practitioners such as chiropractors. The chapter written by Dr. Liebenson discusses how manual resistance techniques can be used in rehabilitation. This is a plus for the text, and will help bring it a wider audience. Like the other books in this series, the illustrations are of high quality, and of good pedagogic value. References are numerous and current. There is a wealth of basic and clinical information. The material is covered in sufficient depth. I'm impressed with the entire series that Dr. Chaitow has prepared. As a look at modern osteopathic procedures, the series is well worth purchasing, and any one of the booksstands alone quite well. This one is nicely done, and has the kind of depth that makes it a worthwhile purchase for both the practitioner and the student. For anyone interested in learning the clinical osteopathic procedures in common use, this and the other books are essential purchases. They have great didactic value, and this more than most.

16 PNF in practice : an illustrated guide / Susan S. Adler, Dominiek Beckers, Math Buck Springer 2008 WB541 A237p 2008 Advanced bookpic Deborah A. Josbeno This how-to manual is an illustration of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) patterns and techniques for the clinician. Coverage includes beginning and advanced techniques in PNF covering mat activities and functional skills. This is a second edition text. The purpose is to review treatment methods developed by Dr. Kabot and expanded upon by Maggie Knott. The authors' intent is to provide comprehensive coverage of practical techniques with plentiful illustrations and provide a text that compliments other theoretical texts on PNF. I believe the authors have accomplished their objective in an outstanding manner. This book is written for the physical therapy practitioner in training or one who has clinical experience in movement disorders. However, it is also useful for other clinical disciplines such as occupational therapy. The authors are well suited to write this text and were all trained under Maggie Knott, a pioneer in PNF. This text includes over 200 figures and 500 illustrations. Topics include basic procedures and techniques for the extremities and trunk with functional emphasis on mat activities, gait training, and vital functions including breathing, swallowing, and speech. Evaluation, treatment planning, and goal setting are addressed in a separate chapter on patient treatment. The book is well referenced and has topical as well as cited references for further reading. Numerous tables and highlighted boxes are supplied to emphasize specific procedural techniques and key observations. Overall, the content is excellent and clearly explained. This is a very practical, easy reading text that would serve well in a clinical lab setting as part of atherapeutic exercise course. This book can also be use as a self- study guide and could serve as an excellent supplement to traditional texts in this field.
17 Principles & techniques of patient care / Frank M. Pierson, Sheryl L. Fairchild Saunders/Elsevier 2008 WB460 P624p 2008 Basic bookpic Christopher J. Hughes This book addresses fundamental procedures and skills required of a physical therapist in patient preparation, handling, and safety. This revised second edition offers expanded information from the first edition as well as completely new topics on the Americans with Disabilities Act and management of pressure ulcers. The intended purpose for publishing a second edition is to incorporate suggestions from users of the first edition and to refine the text organization to make it easier for faculty and students to use in an academic setting. An emphasis on goals and functional outcomes in documentation has also been added. The layout of the text includes greater use of outlines and tables. This edition fulfills the author's objectives. This book is best suited for use in a first level physical therapy clinical procedures course. According to the author, many of the additions to the second edition have been made to enhance the use of this text as a teaching and learning tool for faculty and students. In twelve chapters the areas of patient education and procedures, treatment planning documentation, and communication are covered. Body mechanics, positioning and draping, exercise preparation, and transfer procedures make up the majority of written material. Additional chapters on ambulatory aids and wheelchairs, vital signs, emergency care, and infection control, along with a separate section reviewing compliance and implementation of the ADA, give this text a broad appeal. All areas are well-organized and objectives and key terms are presented at the beginning of each chapter. Clear tables and highlight boxes of key points make the text easy to read and enhance efficient study of thematerial. Self study questions appear at the end of each chapter. I found this book easy to read, well-organized, and appropriate for an entry level physical therapy procedures course. Topics are covered in adequate depth and the quality illustrative formatting is a strong feature. Since this is primarily a teaching text, I feel it would have also been appropriate to include more information on teaching activities and to include some case studies.
18 Professionalism in physical therapy : history, practice & development / Laura Lee Swisher, Catherine G. Page Elsevier Saunders 2005 WB460 S979p 2005 Advanced bookpic Doody Review Services Reviewer: Barbara Jean Billek-Sawhney, PT, EdD, GCS (Slippery Rock University) Description: This book explores the professional roles of the physical therapist in the United States. Purpose: The purpose is to close the gap in written physical therapy resources on nonclinical course material. This book strives to address the various roles of the physical therapist such as consultant, critical inquirer, patient/client manager, educator, and administrator. Audience: The audience is entry-level clinicians, although it would be an asset to advanced physical therapy courses in areas of professionalism, ethics, history of the profession, and growth. The book is written by Laura Lee Swisher and Catherine G. Page, both of the University of South Florida who are very knowledgeable in the topics. Features: The book is divided into three parts with a total of 11 chapters. It begins with a historical perspective and lays the groundwork with an overview of physical therapy as a profession, the historical background, and contemporary issues facing the profession. The second part of the book focuses on the five roles of the physical therapist as described in the guide. These include the physical therapist as a patient/client manager, consultant, critical inquirer, educator, and administrator. The last section further addresses professionalism, professional development, competence, and future challenges. Quotes are frequently used as an introduction to the chapter. The book frequently and appropriately employs APTA concepts and information. Each chapter ends with questions for reflection and/or valuable case scenarios. Assessment: This is a valuable resource that would enhance many courses related to professionalism, history of the profession, education, and ethics for entry-level students and clinicians taking advanced coursework. The writing style is easy to read. Chapters are formatted with good organization. The book would benefit from answers to the end of chapter questions and actual scenarios or examples of how the content is applied in physical therapy practice in an appendix.

Consisting of 238 pages of accessible text supported by 240 illustrations (mostly photographs of patients in therapy), this work is the ideal clinical guide for physical and occupational therapists, for students and practitioners working with neurologically impaired adults, and for Bobath instructors as well as trainers in physiotherapy in general. Gjelsvik successfully bridges the gap between evidencebased clinical practice and theoretical assumptions, developing a clear understanding of the neuromusculoskeletal system, of motor control, of neural and muscle plasticity, and ultimately of the structure and function of the organism as a whole. The fine balance between theoretical information, clinical relevance, and practical examples make this an essential book for learning all about the interaction between the central nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, movement, and function. Bente Gjelsvik thus improves any Bobath therapist's competency in achieving the best possible assessment of the individual with neurological conditions, for best possible results of the treatment.
