Agricultural medicine : a practical guide / James E. Lessenger, editor ; foreword by Stan Schuman Springer 2006 WA400 A2785 2006 Advanced bookpic This is a practical manual for practitioners caring for farmers, farm families, and workers in the agricultural setting. Purpose: This book was written to address the unique health issues of those involved in the wide-ranging but often neglected agricultural industry. Given the fact that in urban-oriented America, rural health is often ignored, this book fills a much needed role in the medical literature. Audience: The book is intended for clinicians working in rural and agricultural settings. It is also useful for students aspiring to join rural practices. The authors have strong ties to universities tasked with developing physicians and caregivers for rural America. Features: This is a chapter by chapter outline of how to approach virtually every aspect of care for rural families and agricultural workers. There is an excellent balance of prevention and treatment, as well as appropriate discussions of the chemical risks of modern herbicides and insecticides. Given the severe stresses inherent in the current agribusiness climate, the section on mental health is particularly pertinent. Assessment: This is the best 500-page sized book on agricultural medicine that I have encountered. While much of its information is available elsewhere, it is nonetheless a ready source of information for busy clinicians who treat farmers and farm families. Urban physicians should also find it an interesting read, if for no other reason than to find out what they are missing. from Doody Review Services Reviewer: Donald R. Frey, MD (Creighton University Medical Center)
Atlas of occupational health and disease / Nerys R. Williams, John Harrison Distributed in the US by Oxford University Press 2004 WA400 W725a 2004 Advanced bookpic Serving as a concise textbook as well as an illustrative reference, the atlas covers all the major occupational disorders and their causes with a particular focus on disease recognition, risk assessment and prevention of occupational diseases. Emphasising clinical and diagnostic aspects, each group of images is accompanied by a brief, but full, description of the condition being illustrated. The high quality illustrations comprise mainly full-colour photographs drawn from a number of international sources. The comprehensive content is divided into sections according to the conditions being presented. Parts One and Two describe, respectively, diseases associated with chemical and physical agents including the effects of exposure to metals, pesticides, noise, heat and cold. Part Three describes diseases relating to ergonomic and mechanical factors, while Part Four looks at those associated with microbiological agents including TB and malaria. Further Parts consider occupational disorders of the skin and lung, occupationally related cancers and reproductive effects. Consideration is also given to the important areas of work and mental health, and to workplace assessment and worker protection. Ideal for the trainee and practising occupational health physician, general practitioners, and occupational and public health practitioners, the book will also be a useful reference for occupational health nurses and occupational hygienists, trainees specialising in internal medicine and medical students.
Child health and the environment / Donald T. Wigle Oxford University Press 2003 WA671 W658c 2003 Advanced bookpic This is the first textbook to focus on environmental threats to child health. It will interest professionals and graduate students in public health, pediatrics, environmental health, epidemiology, and toxicology. The first three chapters provide overviews of key children's environmental health issues as well as the role of environmental epidemiology and risk assessment in child health protection. Overarching themes are the susceptibility of the rapidly developing fetus and infant to environmental toxicants, the importance of modifying factors(e.g. poverty, genetic traits, nutrition), the role of health outcome and exposure monitoring, uncertainties surrounding environmental exposure limits, and the importance of timely intervention. Later chapters address the health effects of metals, PCBs, dioxins, pesticides, hormonally active agents, radiation, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and water contaminants. In analyzing potential environmental hazards, the author addresses both biologic and epidemiologic evidence, including the likelihood of causal relationships. Among the health outcomes he discusses are developmental, reproductive, and neurobehavioral effects, respiratory disease, cancer, and waterborne infectious diseases. These discussions cover environmental exposure sources/indicators, interventions, and standards, and conclude with a summary of calls for an improved science base to guide public health decisions and protect child health.
Core curriculum for occupational & environmental health nursing / American Association of Occupational Health Nurses ; edited by Mary K. Salazar Saunders 2006 WY18 C79677 2006 Advanced bookpic A comprehensive overview of occupational and environmental health nursing, this book is AAOHN's statement of the scope of practice for this nursing specialty. It represents the latest body of knowledge significant to this field. Written in an outline format, it can be used as a textbook for an occupational and environmental health nursing course, as a clinical reference in a variety of occupational settings, and as a certification review tool. This new edition is based on recent revisions to the AAOHN's Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. ◎ New chapter on disaster planning and management addresses responsibilities of occupational health nurses in hazard situations in both the workplace and in the larger community. ◎ The latest government initiatives and guidelines are covered, such as OSHA's Strategic Management Plan to reduce workplace fatalities, injuries, and illnesses, plus other new workplace-related government programs and legislation. ◎ Revised competencies of practice, with performance criteria, present thecurrent practice expectations at each level of practice. ◎ Revised Code of Ethics is a guide for nurses to maintain and pursue professionally recognized ethical behavior in providing occupational and environmental health services. ◎ Revised Standards of Practice define the practice of this specialty and provide a framework for evaluation. ◎ Expanded content in the environmental, research, and health promotion chapters highlights the latest information in these areas.
Current occupational & environmental medicine / edited by Joseph LaDou McGraw-Hill 2007 WA440 O142 2007 Advanced bookpic In its fourth edition, this book provides a complete guide to common occupational injuries and environmental illnesses, their diagnosis and treatment, and preventive and remedial measures in the workplace and the community. It rather thoroughly addresses ergonomics, clinical toxicology, and industrial hygiene, among many other important issues. Purpose: This edition continues to provide detailed coverage of diagnosis and treatment of a broad spectrum of occupational injuries and occupational and environmental illnesses. Like other volumes in the series, it is intended to be practical as well as concise. Audience: This book's appeal is to a broad range of professionals, certainly occupational and environmental medicine physicians and allied personnel. Its dual goals of being concise, yet comprehensive, will likely recommend it to primary care physicians and their consultants as well. Features: This new edition features the latest OSHA/NIOSH guidelines, a detailed diagnostic checklist for major diseases, clinically relevant perspectives on disability prevention, and a step-by-step review of how to effectively manage an occupational health and safety program. Assessment: Given the four-year span since the third edition, this 2007 publication allows inclusion of a more global approach. Both by virtue of international authorship and scope, its appeal is quite a bit broader. from Doody Review Services Reviewer: J. Thomas Pierce, MBBS PhD(Navy Environmental Health Center)

Endocrine disrupters in wastewater and sludge treatment processes / [edited by] Jason W. Birkett, John N. Lester Lewis Pub. 2004 WK102 E5662 2003 Advanced bookpic The sources of and problems associated with endocrine disrupters are described in eight chapters by seven specialists who teach in the UK. Birkett (forensic science, U. of Lincoln) provides the initial chapters on the scope of the problem and source of the disrupters. Lester (water technology, environmental processes, Imperial College, London) co-authored three chapters on the fate and behavior of endocrine disrupters in wastewater treatment, sludge treatment, and receiving water. Drinking water and management strategies are also discussed. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR Annotation Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) have been shown to produce changes in the endocrine system of organisms that lead to increases in cancers and abnormalities in reproductive structure and function. Recent research has highlighted the existence of hormonally active compounds in sewage and industrial effluents and their potential for recycling back into the environment - including drinking water supplies- through point sources and non-point sources. Endocrine Disrupters in Wastewater and Sludge Treatment Processes presents the latest research on EDCs, covering the sources, fate, and transport of EDCs in sewage and industrial effluents, and sludge treatment and disposal options in light of effects on receiving environments. In addition, the authors review current legislation, future research needs, and potential management strategies for endocrine disrupters in the environment.

Environmental health science : recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical and physical health hazards / Morton Lippmann, Beverly S. Cohen, Richard B. Schlesinger Oxford University Press 2003 WA30 L766 2003 Advanced bookpic This is a broad, in-depth introduction to a scientific field that is becoming ever more central to human health. Environmental exposures to a bewildering array of chemical and physical agents result from our individual and collective activities, and can cause effects ranging from discomfort through loss of function, illness, chronic diseases, and premature death. Their concomitant effects on quality of life, productivity, and need for clinical services can be costly. The book covers the terminology used in environmental health; the sources of chemical and physical agents in the environment; how they disperse and transform throughout the environment; their effects on environmental quality and human health; how levels and exposures are quantified; how standards are established; how levels, exposures, and risks can be controlled; and what technological opportunities and trends are likely to influence our environmental future. It includes chapters on noise, ionizing radiation, non-ionizing radiation, risk assessment, and risk management. Written in a clear and systematic way, this text will be an invaluable resource for students of environmental health. An earlier version of the book, Chemical Contamination in the Human Environment (OUP 1979), was called by one teacher "visionary...easily the most useful textbook in environmental health science for entry-level graduate students."
Environmental toxicants : human exposures and their health effects / edited by Morton Lippmann Wiley-Interscience 2006 WA671 E615 2006 Advanced bookpic Current knowledge on the health effects of toxicants in the ambient environment. Now in a second edition, Environmental Toxicants: Human Exposures and Their Health Effects continues to offer a unique perspective on a topic that is usually focused on exposure and effects in industrial settings. Fully revised and expanded, it presents comprehensive, cutting-edge information on the effects of human exposure to selected chemicals and physical agents in nonoccupational environments. Dr. Morton Lippmann assembles expert contributions by leading authorities on each of the 25 environmental agents examined, providing a critical review of the accumulated evidence concerning their known or likely impact on human health, especially after long-term exposure. Six new chapters have been added to this edition, discussing ambient particulate matter, chromium, mercury, noise, pesticides, and ultraviolet radiation. Existing chapters have been updated to include the most current information on performing risk assessments for established toxicants- from asbestos and benzene to the sick building syndrome. In the closing chapters, the authors place the discussion in a broader social and scientific context, exploring such issues as individual and community risk, environmental engineering for risk reduction, pulmonary medicine, and lessons learned in the industrial sector. Supplemented with more than 100 illustrations and photographs, and with a view to future research trends, Environmental Toxicants: Human Exposures and Their Health Effects is an indispensable guide for public health officials, industrial hygienists, epidemiologists, and primary care physicians involved in riskassessment and management for exposed individuals and populations.

They cover both the toxicological substantiation of threshold values for chemicals at the workplace (MAK and BAT values) and the suitable monitoring methods. Thus, they are an indispensable tool for maintaining occupational health and safety. For 16 of the most important occupational toxicants, detailed, ready-to-use protocols for air monitoring methods are provided in this special volume. The methods were developed to monitor concentrations of occupational toxicants at the workplace. They can also be used for environmental monitoring. All methods are reliable, reproducible, in accordance with quality assurance standards and cover all required steps from sampling to the interpretation of results. This includes data on precision, accuracy, and detection limit, calibration procedures as well as potential sources of systematic errors. Advantages and Disadvantages of each method are clearly outlined. The documented methods are authoritative, because they were compiled by the Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area. The Commission is internationally acknowledged for its neutrality and is working strictly according to transparent, scientific criteria.
Essential BAT value documentations : from the MAK-Collection for occupational health and safety / edited by Hans Drexler and Helmut Greim Wiley-VCH ; John Wiley 2006 WA450 E785b 2006 Advanced bookpic All volumes of the MAK-Collection provide comprehensive and authoritative information for occupational health and safety professionals and researchers. They cover both the toxicological substantiation of threshold values for chemicals at the workplace (MAK and BAT values) and the suitable monitoring methods. Thus, they are an indispensable tool for maintaining occupational health and safety. For more than 20 of the most important occupational toxicants, the documentations for the established BAT values (Biological Tolerance Values) and EKA (Exposure Equivalents for Carcinogenic Substances) as well as for further biological exposure values were selected for this special volume. These include an authoritative review of the available toxicological studies and data. For every substance, metabolism and pharmacokinetics, critical toxicity, exposure and effects, suitable indicators of internal exposure, the evaluation of the BAT value and the correct interpretation of data are described. Basic physico-chemical data are provided as well. The documentations are thus not only essential for the application of BAT and EKA values but provide a concise overview of biological monitoring for each substance. The documentations are authoritative, because they were compiled by the Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area. The Commission is internationally acknowledged for its neutrality and is working strictly according to transparent, scientific criteria. MAK Value documentations arecurrently being translated into Chinese.
Fitness for work : the medical aspects / [edited by] Keith T. Palmer, Robin A.F. Cox, and Ian Brown Oxford University Press 2007 WA400 F546 2007 Advanced bookpic First published in 1988, Fitness for Work has grown to become the UK 'bible' of occupational health and the Faculty of Occupational Medicine's flagship publication. This fourth edition reflects significant developments in legislation and guidelines, and changes in the information requirements of those working in the field. Demographic factors, such as an ageing population, and changes in work practice and social and political policy, mean the need for advice on theeffects of medical conditions on employment and working capability is increasing. In keeping with previous editions, chapters are organized by medical condition, and co-authored by both a topic specialist and a specialist occupational physician. The reader will find practical guidance on the employment potential and assessment of anyone with an illness or disability. There is additional coverage of the ethical and legal aspects of ill health at work. There is an attempt to discuss and include, where possible, the evidence base and guidelines behind the findings. This updatealso reflects recent government focus on a more holistic approach to health problems in employment, and initiatives to encourage people to stay at work and return to work, rather than supporting them at home.To an extent, occupational medicine must be tailored to individual patients under unique and specific circumstance. However, this book provides a wealth of useful consensus guidance, codes of practice, and locally evolved standards, to enable clinical judgements to be made. It is the most comprehensive text available on the effects of ill health on employment.
Food at work : workplace solutions for malnutrition, obesity and chronic diseases / Christopher Wanjek International Labour Office 2005 WA412 W247 2005 Advanced bookpic Good nutrition, like other vital occupational safety and health issues, is the foundation of workplace productivity and safety--priority concerns shared by unions, workers, employers, and governments around the world. It is well documented that unhealthy foods can lead to obesity and chronic diseases, while macro- and micronutrient deficiencies can cause malnutrition. In both these instances, the effects are detrimental to a strong, well-equipped workforce. This comprehensive volume established a clear link between good nutrition and high productivity. It demonstrates that ensuring that workers have access to nutritious, safe, and affordable food, and adequate meal break and decent conditions for eating is not only socially important and economically viable, but a profitable business practice too. Setting out key points for designing a meal program, it presents a multitude of "food solutions," including canteens, meal or food vouchers, mess rooms and kitchenettes, and partnerships with local vendors. Through case studies from a variety of enterprises in 28 industrialized and developing countries, the book offers valuable practical food solutions which can be adapted to workplaces of different sizes and with different budgets. It also addresses an often-overlooked issue in nutrition: access to clean drinking water. Relevant laws, regulations, and guides pertaining to meal breaks and workplace nutrition are also highlighted in this volume, and an extensive section containing checklists and other useful resources for unions, employers and governments is included.
Global inequalities at work : work's impact on the health of individuals, families, and societies / edited by Jody Heymann Oxford University Press 2003 WA400 G562 2003 e-book Advanced bookpic A map of the relationship between work and health that is truly global--both geographically and in its coverage of the impact of work on the health of individuals, families, and societies, has not previously been drawn. Global Inequalities at Work is the first book to fill in the map. Drawing from studies done around the world, it critically examines the many ways in which work is affecting health around the world. The first section covers the wide range of risks--physical, chemical, and social--tot he health of employees in agricultural, industrial, and post-industrial workplaces. Part II provides a detailed analysis of how working conditions can dramatically influence the health and welfare of family members--including children, elderly parents, and the disabled--in both the developing and industrial world. Part III examines the relationships between work and health at the societal level by focusing on two examples: the ways in which working conditions affect income inequalities and health, and the ways in which working conditions influence gender inequalities and health. Part IV investigates the new challenges to and opportunities for improving the relationship between work and health that are presented by a rapidly globalizing economy. "Global Inequalities at Work is probably one of thefirst books to examine the impact of work on health of families and societies in different parts of the world. Besides its immediate relevance for occupational health, public health, and public policy programs, [this book] can potentially offer another important contribution, as a temporal landmark for future observation of the exten and speed of improvement in global work conditions and the success or failure of the different strategies described by its authors for such improvements." --JAMA

International classification of HRCT for occupational and environmental respiratory diseases / Y. Kusaka, K.G. Hering, J.E. Parker (eds.) Springer 2005 WF600 I576 2005 Advanced bookpic This book presents the development and application of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) during the last 20 years. It demonstrates the anatomic detail possible with HRCT, in combination with detailed correlation of HRCT lung abnormalities with histologic findings. The book includes electronic media (a CD-ROM) complete with reference films, a reading sheet and coding classifications. Purpose: The editors have as their purpose better assessment of pneumoconiosis by virtue of HRCT findings. The book is based on conclusions of an international meeting of experts in lung imaging and pneumoconiosis diagnosis held in Nikko, Japan, and subsequently refined by investigators from countries around the world. Audience: While some would argue that this book's appeal is primarily to radiologists and radiographers, I would argue its appeal is much broader, extending to a wide range of physicians and associated personnel. Some of its features, such as the glossary of HRCT terms and chapter 4 on radiation exposure and risk assessment, are among the best I have read. Features: The organization of the book is in three primary sections: classification system (glossary of HRCT terms, coding CT-classification for pertinent diseases, technical aspects and imaging parameters); practice and study protocol (radiation exposure and risk assessment in HRCT, application of the International Classification of HRCT, ILO international classifications); and CT images (pleural diseases, parenchymal changes of CT imaging and radiological and pathological correlation of autopsied cases of pneumoconioses). Assessment: This is a groundbreaking work, encompassing a principal coding system, suitable reference films and imaging parameters for the International Classification of HRCT for Occupational and Environmental Respiratory Diseases. It serves as an authoritative guide to the recognition of dust diseases of the lung, using radiological imaging techniques, with special emphasis on high-resolution computed tomography. Its classification is a powerful, essential tool for recording patient data on CT in a globally standardized semi-quantitative way. This system is also applicable to surveillance and screening for occupational and environmental respiratory diseases. Using the accompanying CD-ROM containing the reference films, readers can interpret clinical data. from Doody Review Services Reviewer: J. Thomas Pierce, MB.BS, PhD (Navy Environmental Health Center)

Occupational and environmental health : recognizing and preventing disease and injury / [edited by] Barry S. Levy ... [et al.] Lippincott Williams & Wilkins 2005 WA440 O153 2006 Advanced bookpic This book offers a thoughtful look at the means of addressing significant hazards arising from work and extending in presence and consequence throughout the community. The book is rather complete in is treatment of common occupational injuries, their diagnosis and treatment, and preventive measures. These are made applicable to the workplace and community as a whole. Purpose: In the preface, the editors note this edition is intended to reflect important changes ranging from global warming health issues to the recognition of new work hazards. In the process of reflecting these changes, the editors and author panel find occupational health relevant to the sense of community well-being. They posit an integrated relationship existing among employment, environment, and health. Perhaps they have finally answered the quintessential question surrounding environmental health. Audience: Given the book's integrated, holistic viewpoint, the nursing profession will make special use of it. It has appeal to a broad range of professionals, certainly including occupational and environmental medicine physicians. The book should also be recommended to primary care physicians as well as to toxicologists and industrial hygienists. Features: The book is organized into five major sections: work, environment, and health; recognition, assessment, and prevention; hazardous exposures; adverse health effects; and an integrated approach to prevention. Each section is subsequently divided into individual chapters, which make it easy to find a particulartopic. Assessment: Given a six-year span since the fourth edition, the update includes new material on the application and integration of occupational and environmental health principles. It appears it is also acquiring a more international perspective. This is now a rather lively book for a scholarly topic. Beyond its carefully crafted text, it includes Earl Dotter photographs and the superb drawings of Nick Thorkelson. As a personal recommitment to the principles of occupational and environmental health, I sat and read most of it in an evening. I now find myself opening its pages to help "recognize and prevent disease in a changing world." These are large tasks, indeed. from Doody Review Services Reviewer: J. 23 The occupational environment : its evaluation, control, and management / Salvatore R. DiNardi, editor AIHA Press 2005 WA440 O143 2003 Advanced bookpic This second edition of the "White Book" assumes the mantle of NIOSH's Industrial Environment, Its Evaluation and Control , first published in 1973. The 49 chapters are written by selected experts in their fields, from crisis management to report writing and from local exhaust ventilation to barometric hazards gives an example of the extensive scope of this book. The "White Book" captures newer topics such as indoor air quality and crisis issues related to terrorist attacks. Purpose: The editor has assembled an excellent group of professionals with cogent information for government and private sector safety professionals, from beginning to experienced. Each chapter ends with an exhaustive list of pertinent references, so the safety professional may study further if necessary. This book will enable industrial hygienists or other safety professionals to become quickly and completely informed. Safety consultants will also find this reference useful as a refresher for areas that come up infrequently. Audience: This book is written for all safety professionals, including certified health and safety professionals in industrial hygiene, health physics, and safety; as well as those individuals who have environmental regulatory responsibilities. Features: This is a meticulously referenced work that attempts to bring together an immense body of knowledge:that of the environmental, health, and safety professional. The editor has accumulated preeminent authors, organized the content, and included an exhaustive index making it a useable desk reference. This book should be included in the safety professional's library along with Casarett and Doull's Toxicology: The Basic Science of Poisons , 6th edition, by Klaassen (McGraw-Hill , 2001) and Patty's Industrial Hygiene , 5th Edition (John Wiley & Sons, 2000). Assessment: This is an excellent safety professional's operations reference with scholarly documentation. The editor continues to meet the mark with regard to timeliness and appropriateness. I like and use the book. As is true in all things, verification of facts is necessary before taking a course of action, and this second edition assists the overburdened safety professional in that endeavor. from Doody Review Services Reviewer: Charles R.
