6 Aging and older adulthood / Joan T. Erber Thomson/Wadsworth 2005 HQ1061 E73 2005 Basic bookpic Synopsis This psychology textbook discusses the theoretical and methodological aspects of studying aging and older adulthood, then addresses specific issues relating to health, sensation and perception, memory, cognition and problem solving, personality and coping, social interaction, retirement and living arrangements, psychopathology and therapy, and death. From the Publisher Filled with examples that reflect the diversity of the world we live in, Erber's accessible, yet science-based book focuses on research and theory that add to our understanding of aging and older adulthood. Erber organizes the book around complementary 'big point-of-view' theories that focus on successful aging and successful adaptation (such as 'selective optimization with compensation') as well as on those that emphasize matching the person's competencies with demands of the environment (such as the 'ecological model'). To ensure that students acquire a big-picture understanding of the theory's application, Erber closes each chapter with a discussion of these theoretical models.
7 Aging, globalization, and inequality : the new critical gerontology / edited by Jan Baars ... [et al.] Baywood 2006 HQ1061 A4274 2006 Basic bookpic Doody Review Services Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD(University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center) Description: This is a multiauthored work on a new way to look at gerontology: critical gerontology. This approach emphasizes social forces that operate across the world that permit looking at how world trends influence gerontology. Critical gerontology also draws on sociology, political economy, feminist theory, and social anthropology. The result is a beguiling book unlike any other. Purpose: The purpose is to set forth concepts of critical gerontology. This new way of looking at gerontology is splendidly presented. Audience: There will be a broad readership of this book throughout academe and by policy makers for the aging. This is not a book for beginners; the book presupposes some understanding of gerontology. The authors are all leading experts in their fields. Features: The book features well-paginated essays on critical gerontology. Carroll Estes's scintillatingly brilliant essay on a feminist view of gerontology shows how a male-dominated world manipulates the aging of women. Stephen Katz's critique of "function" as the basis of medical gerontology is stunning. Kathyrn Douthit's essay on dementia points out the conceptual limitations of the DSM. Assessment: This is a brilliant and original contribution to the field of gerontology. It brings conceptualizations of modern philosophers and the humanities and social sciences to bear on gerontology in new and exciting ways. Effete geriatricians, gerontologists, and policy-makers: beware! Here the gaps in your thinking are revealed. How audacious it is to look at gerontologythrough completely different lenses. This book will amaze you.
8 Anti-aging solution : 5 simple steps to looking and feeling young / Vincent Giampapa, Ronald Pero, Marcia Zimmerman ; foreword by Nicholas Perricone Wiley 2004 WT116 G432 2004 Basic bookpic Synopsis A medically proven program to prevent and reverse the DNA damage that causes aging You have it in your power to retain the health, beauty, and vitality of youth well past fifty or sixty and beyond. All of us grow older, but it's a medically proven fact that how we age is a choice. With a few simple lifestyle changes, you can reap amazing visible and tangible benefits in just a few days—and this groundbreaking book shows you how. Written by an all-star team of internationally acclaimed anti-aging experts, The Anti-Aging Solution is the first guide to reveal how you can reverse aging on a genetic level. By following a uniquely effective five-step program—which includes stress-reduction techniques, easy-to-follow dietary guidelines, moderate exercise, inexpensive skin treatments, and supplements—you can reverse DNA damage, enhance DNA repair, and start to look younger, feel younger, and be younger right away. The Anti-Aging Solution shows you how to: * Say goodbye to aching joints, sagging skin, and fatigue * Improve the quality and function of the genetic material in your cells * Ramp up your body's self-repair functions * Increase your stamina, endurance, and sex drive * Dramatically improve your resistance to disease, including many cancers * Have more youthful, radiant skin Publishers Weekly Anti-aging expert Giampapa (Quantum Longevity), DNA researcher Pero and nutritionist Zimmerman present a five-step program that claims to reverse the aging process. Before readers can say they've seen this before, the authors insist their book is different because it "attacks aging at its genetic roots with a comprehensive plan." Giampapa, Pero and Zimmerman first present a set of simple self-examinations for readers to "factor their personal aging equation" by measuring "aging indicators" like chronic pain, poor memory and reduced mobility. After a detailed explanation of how poor nutrition and free-radical damage promote aging, the authors present their program, which intends to change "the way our genes express themselves." The five stages consist of reducing stress, enhancing nutrition, exercising regularly, using dietary supplements and caring for the skin. For each step, the authors offer an abundance of helpful pointers; their advice on nutrition and its effects is particularly useful. Among the book's perks are easy to follow, color-coded charts detailing a healthy diet (which can be modified for vegetarians), recommended exercise routines that are beneficial but not overly demanding, skin care regimens and a list of suppliers of nutraceuticals (natural, bioactive chemical compounds that have health-promoting, disease-preventing or medicinal properties).
9 Changing worlds and the ageing subject : dimensions in the study of ageing and later life / edited by Britt-Marie Oberg ... [et al.] Ashgate 2004 WT145 C456 2004 Advanced bookpic From the Publisher Research into ageing and later life has tended to describe old age in relation to society's problems concerning health and social care. Today demographic changes, current advancements in technology, and political and socio-cultural developments also affect the living conditions of both young and old people. This exceptional volume draws together scholars from Europe and the USA to inspire and encourage new research approaches. Taking old people's own ideas, experiences and opinions as the starting point for studies of the ageing process, the contributors regard old age as an equally important and varied stage of the life cycle. The volume considers the humanistic-historical dimension of ageing and substantiates new perspectives on family roles and intergenerational relationships. It also examines age discrimination, the impact of the increase in early retirement, the effect of old and new technology on older people's lives, different ageing experiences of men and women, and how to emphasize old people's own interpretation and understanding of the ageing process.
10 End-of-life care and outcomes / prepared for Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ; prepared by Southern California Evidence-based Practice Center RAND Corporation ; principal investigators, Karl Lorenz, Joanne Lynn Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality 2004 WB310 E563 2004 Advanced Context The “end-of-life” refers to a prolonged, difficult period for patients and caregivers. Nine-tenths of Medicare-insured elderly live with a serious, chronic condition before death. Due to our aging population, Americans will increasingly face such challenges. Objectives Focusing on the outcomes patient and family satisfaction; pain, dyspnea, depression and anxiety and behavioral problems in dementia; continuity; caregiving burden other than bereavement; and advance care planning, we conducted a systematic review to evaluate the following: 1. The scope of the end-of-life population. 2. Outcome variables that are valid indicators of the quality of the end-of- life experience for the dying person and surviving loved ones. 3. Patient, family, and healthcare system associated with better or worse outcomes at end-of-life. 4. Processes and interventions associated with improved or worsened outcomes. 5. Future research directions for improving end-of-life care.

12 Focus on aging in context : socio-physical environments / Hans-Werner Wahl, Rick J. Scheidt, Paul G. Windley, volume editors Springer 2004 WT104 F6523 2004 Basic bookpic Synopsis Wahl (social and environmental gerontology, U. of Heidelberg, Germany), Scheidt (family studies and human services, Kansas State U., US), and Windley (architecture, U. of Idaho, US) present 13 papers in the new volume of the gerontology series--the first in the series to focus solely on environmental gerontology and its relations to social and behavioral concerns. The interdisciplinary collection considers a range of macro-and micro-scale issues, including the relationship between neighborhoods and well-being in late life, kinship and supportive environments, the role of technology in the experience of aging, the impact of population migration on socio-physical environments, and interior living environments in old age. From the Publisher In this volume, dedicated to M. Powell Lawton, the editors emphasize the need to create new bridges to connect research studies focusing on objective physical environments and other studies predominantly addressing subjective person-environment components. Thus, the major goal of this volume is to provide and stimulate multi- directional bridge building from the perspective of multidisciplinary contributors. Comprehensively addressed subjects include: * Aging in Context Across the Adult Life * The General Ecological Model Revisited * The Fit Between Older People and Their Environments * Domestic Arrangements * The Impact of Population Migration * Interior Environments * Residential Satisfaction * Technology Based Products

Covering the scope of the specialty: * How to become a geriatric nurse * Geriatric nursing organizations and publications * Standards of practice * Certification and licensure * Future directions This text provides both inspirational stories of nursing and practical information on how you can find resources, develop ideas, and access research in order to become a successful geriatric nurse. From the Publisher Reviewer: Graham J. McDougall Jr., PhD, APRN, BC, FAAN, Professor of Nursing and Chair Departmental Review Committee, The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing “Finally someone had the vision and tenacity to write a thorough history of the nurses who care for older adults. Dr. Priscilla Ebersole, a nurse author, scholar and leader, has been a champion of "gerontic" nursing as a mechanism to emphasize holistic care. Priscilla, always the raconteur, has steadily reminded us that as a gerontic nurse life is a journey and we are continuously developing along the way. Along with her coauthor Dr. Theris A. Touhy, current and future generations of gerontic nurses now have their legacy codified in a book which leaves out no detail, from an insider's knowledge of the personal relationships in the field, to the grand federal initiatives that have been implemented over our history.” Reviewer: Shirley S. Travis, PhD, APRN, FAAN, Dean College of Nursing and Health Science, George Mason University “Drs. Ebersole and Touhy bring the specialty of geriatric nursing to life with their reflections on and insights into the growth of a nursing specialty from origins in the 1940s to glimpses of what is to be in the 21st century. Who better to compile histories and narratives about the specialty than Dr. Priscilla Ebersole? She has seen it all and experienced the excitement of "becoming" geriatric nursing from one of the driver's seats. The text provides an interesting and representative review of the progress, maturation, and mandate for the future of the specialty.” Reviewer: Ruth Tappen, EdD, RN, FAAN, Eminent Scholar & Professor Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University “If you have a passion for gerontological nursing but think that its history might be boring, you must read the book Geriatric Nursing: Growth of a Specialty. The primary author, Priscilla Ebersole, often writes in the first person. She was there, she was a part of the growth and development of gerontological nursing. She literally brings history to life in her writing. The second author, Theris Touhy, participated in the growth of the specialty and clearly is inspired by it and inspires the reader in turn. This book is lively, fascinating, a page turner for those of us who live and breathe gerontological nursing. I recommend it to scholars, students, practitioners and anyone else who wishes to learn from the experience of the leaders of this important specialty.” Reviewer: Kathleen (Kitty) Buckwalter, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor, University of Iowa College of Nursing, and Director, Iowa Hartford Center of Nursing Excellence “Holiday packages come in many varieties, and this year I received a special treat in the form of a pre-publication copy of Geriatric Nursing: Growth of a Specialty by Priscilla Ebersole, RN, PhD, FAAN and Theris A. Touhy, ND, APRN, BC. From Teresa Christy, one of my professors and a noted historiographer, I came to appreciate the need to learn from and to honor our nursing history. This gem of a book is a delightful way to do both, and will be required reading in my geriatric nursing courses as well as an appropriate gift for graduates and colleagues in the field.” “Geriatric Nursing: Growth Of A Specialty is well-written, engaging, thought-provoking and comprehensive, spanning topics from geriatric nursing organizations and educational programs to research and recruitment, and highlighting current issues in the field in the context of their historical development.” “In reading this carefully documented book, one appreciates that geriatric nursing is rooted in a rich history thanks to the remarkable contributions of nurse pioneers like Doris Schwartz, Virginia Stone, and Mary Opal Wolanin who are no longer with us, and the enduring legacy and ongoing impact of "living legends" like Mary Starke Harper and Laurie Gunter. This book instills both a sense of pride and of hope for geriatric nursing: we are building upon a great tradition, AND the future is in caring and capable hands. One final thought: read the Forward. It is a moving and well deserved tribute to the first author, Dr. Ebersole, herself a remarkable geriatric nursing leader.”

18 Healthy aging : a lifelong guide to your physical and spiritual well-being / Andrew Weil Alfred A. Knopf 2005 WT104 W422h 2005 Basic bookpic Editorial Reviews Publishers Weekly America's best-known complementary care physician offers a convincing portrait of aging as a natural part of life that can be active, productive and satisfying. Using the examples of his mother, who died at age 93; centenarians from Okinawa and Sardinia; and myths and legends, Weil (Eating Well for Optimum Health) explores common Western beliefs and attitudes about aging and urges readers to develop healthier perspectives. The 60-year-old author assesses the growing and lucrative field of anti-aging medicine, takes the position that aging is not reversible, and offers many ways for readers to prevent conditions and illnesses that limit mortality and ensure well-being into the later years. He provides scientifically based information on why and how the body ages and advice on key components of good health at every age: exercise, nutrition, vitamins and herbs, and stress-relieving activities. Much of this advice is available in Weil's previous works as well as on his Web site. The real value is Weil's courageous stand, one likely to meet resistance in a culture devoted to external indicators of eternal youth. Refreshingly, Weil embraces the notion, popular in Eastern cultures, that age brings wisdom, peace and prosperity of a different kind. Library Journal In his latest book, Weil (director, Program in Integrative Medicine, Univ. of Arizona; 8 Weeks to Optimum Health) explains the aging process and offers practical guidelines for maintaining good health while growing older. He begins with a discussion of the physiological processes involved before segueing into various antiaging therapies and explaining why they don't work. Using reputable scientific studies as a basis, he provides tools that will help us age well: good nutrition to minimize inflammation, the cause of cardiovascular disease; physical activity; a few well-chosen nutritional supplements; adequate rest and sleep; stress reduction; and a satisfying social and spiritual life. Although this is not groundbreaking information, Weil's inclusion of scientific sources sets his book apart from the glut of antiaging titles, e.g., Michael F. Roizen's The RealAge Makeover: Take Years Off Your Looks and Add Them to Your Life. Highly recommended for public and consumer health libraries.

21 Public health and aging : an introduction to maximizing function and well-being / Steven M. Albert Springer 2004  WA300.1 A3331 2004   Basic bookpic From the Publisher This text provides a framework and a first synthesis of a burgeoning literature in geriatrics, gerontology, occupational therapy, epidemiology, demography, neuropsychology, rehabilitation medicine, social work, and public policy. Key concepts and tools that define the field of public health and aging such as cohort analysis, the lifetable, age-sex pyramids, and risk stratification are presented. A synthesis of the most productive measures of healthy aging, also of "successful aging" and frailty; sample studies; and clinical trials that address the question of age, health, and healthy old age are also included. Doody Review Services Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center) Description: This book, written by a single author, delineates a new field in gerontology and geriatrics. It is a marriage of clinical geriatrics and epidemiology that looks at how we age, how we become disabled, demented, etc., and where we should focus efforts to maximize the quality of life in older persons. Purpose: The purpose is to show how we should look at both populations of older persons and individuals as they age. These are most worthy objectives and the author accomplishes them brilliantly. Audience: The audience is gerontologists, geriatricians, biologists studying aging and social planners; and trainees in these areas. It is indeed a broad audience. Features: This book breaks new ground in showing a synthesis between our notions of aging, function, frailty, dementing illnesses, and care of older persons. It explains some of how what happens in the first 50 years of life affects the second 50. This book is both fresh thinking and a brilliant synthesis of known facts. Assessment: This is one of the most cutting-edge books in gerontology today. Anyone interested in reforming Medicare should read this book in preparation for doing so. It is elegantly written, develops its thoughts in a logical and complete sequence and points towards the future like a beacon. Those interested in developing new paradigms of thinking about aging and caring for older persons will find much of use here. Every medical library should possess this brilliant and enticing book.
22 Strategies for therapy with the elderly : living with hope and meaning / Claire M. Brody, Vicki G. Semel with contributors Springer 2006 WT150 B864s 2006 Advanced bookpic Synopsis In this second edition, Brody and Semel contend that meaningful and successful therapy can be accomplished with an aging population, debunking the belief that the elderly can not pick up or put into practice newly acquired information. Rather, the way in which therapy with aging adults is approached may affect the way in which the therapist initially experiences and reacts to the client because of stereotypes about aging. This book encompasses three major areas of work with elderly clients aged 60 years and older: * Living in nursing homes * Living in assisted living housing, while participating in community-oriented activities for the aged * Living independently and being seen in private practice It comprises a variety of approaches, ranging from eclectic small group formats for nursing home residents, group and individual counseling in assisted living settings, and home care for the elderly, to psychoanalytic therapy techniques in private practice. Illustrative case examples used throughout the book bring to life successful strategies and interventions. New areas of focus include: * Treatment of stress and mental disorders * Alzheimer's disease * Caregiving issues at home * Expanded information on Medicare coverage issues
23 Successful aging through the life span : intergenerational issues in health / May L. Wykle, Peter J. Whitehouse, Diana L. Morris, editors Springer 2005 WT104 S942 2005 Basic bookpic From the Publisher This book explores the best practices for successful aging, examines trends in intergenerational caregiving, and defines roles and responsibilities across the life span. Topics addressed include how to maximize productive engagement of older adults; how multigenerational issues impact successful aging; and the ways in which a learning environment can promote inter-generational relationships. Doody Review Services Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center) Description: This multiauthored book presents the papers from a 2002 gerontology conference held in Cleveland. It uses an intergenerational perspective to look at contemporary gerontology. Purpose: Its purpose is to discuss intergenerational aspects of aging from the individual's perspective, from the family's caregiving perspective, and from society's perspective as well. These are useful ideas. Audience: Gerontologists and social planners and nurses are the primary audience for this book. The papers presented here are all written by credible experts. Features: The book is in three sections: the implications of longevity from an intergenerational perspective, notions of aging successfully, and caring interactions across the generations. Assessment: It is refreshing to read a book whose emphasis is not medical. The chapters on how educational theory can be applied to caring for disabled older persons are novel and engaging. That older persons and their caregivers live in a society, enmeshing levels of capacity, knowledge, and ages gives a perspective of the future challenges of an aging society.
24 Vulnerable older adults : health care needs and interventions / Patricia M. Burbank, editor Springer 2006 WT31 V991 2006 Advanced bookpic Synopsis Explores the concept of vulnerability and addresses five groups of vulnerable older adults: those who are frail, those incarcerated in prisons, homeless older adults, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender elders, and those who are HIV positive or have AIDS. Doody Review Services Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD(University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center) Description: This is a multiauthored book on the healthcare needs of populations of vulnerable older adults. This grouping includes the frail; prisoners; the homeless; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT); and older persons with HIV/AIDS. Purpose: Its purpose is to describe the healthcare needs and interventions necessary for the high-risk vulnerable groups described within the larger ambit of aging services. This book fulfills these objectives admirably. Audience: Policy makers and healthcare workers in a wide variety of disciplines will find much useful information in this book. The authors all have considerable expertise in the areas they cover in the book. Features: Each group of vulnerable older persons is treated with two chapters apiece -- the first describing the healthcare needs and the second describing the interventions. These are surrounded by an introductory chapter and an epilogue. Grouping the frail, the homeless, prisoners, LGBT persons and elders with HIV/AIDS is a brilliant and audacious move. The common thread is that these tend to be marginalized groups, lost in the welter of activity around aging themes. Noting their commonalities and distinct needs is a really innovative aspect of this book. Assessment: That this book was published slightly ahead of the New England Journal of Medicine writing about dialysis programs in prisons shows how ahead of the curve it is. This book is required reading for those wishing to understand the future of healthcare in the United States. It is not only the olderboomers living in suburbia to which the future healthcare system must respond, but also to all of the groups discussed in this book. Pioneering, insightful, futuristic and a digestive of merit, this book deserves a wide readership.
