Basics in medical education / Zubair Amin, Khoo Hoon Eng World Scientific 2009 W18 A517b 2009 Advanced bookpic Medical education, the art and science behind medical teaching and learning, has progressed remarkably. Teaching and learning have become more scientific and rigorous, curricula are based on sound pedagogical principles, and problem-based and other forms of active and self-directed learning have become the mainstream. We have progressed from the role of problem-identifier to that of solution-provider. This book provides a balanced overview of the "why" of medical education, emphasizing the need for change and adaptation, and the "how, " by demonstrating the way concepts and theories of medical education can be of immediate benefit to the medical teacher. In short, this is a simple and non-intimidating book for general medical teachers to enhance their understanding of medical education and to improve their teaching. Medical teachers from all disciplines as well as basic science and clinical teachers.
Basics of public health core competencies / Larry Holmes Jr Jones and Bartlett 2009 WA100 H751b 2009 Basic bookpic Basics of Public Health Core Competencies is a reader-friendly review of the five core competencies as recommended by the Association of Schools of Public Health. A single chapter is devoted to each of the disciplines of epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral and social sciences, environmental health, and health policy and management sciences along with vignettes that illustrate the application of concepts. Using a clear outline format, this text is ideal for courses that offer a basic introduction to the field of public health, or for courses that seek to prepare MPH students for the new certifcation in public health exam.
Behavioral medicine : a guide for clinical practice / edited by Mitchell D. Feldman and John F. Christensen McGraw-Hill Medical 2008 W84.6 B422 2008 Advanced bookpic "This is an extraordinarily thorough, useful book. It manages to summarize numerous topics, many of which are not a part of a traditional medical curriculum, in concise, relevant chapters. Physicians who do not understand the dynamics behind the doctor-patient relationship usually end up being poor doctors, and this book reviews the many behavioral issues that patients have that can affect this relationship. This is a very welcome addition to the medical education literature, and should be required reading for all practicing clinicians."—Doody's Review Service Behavioral Medicine delivers practical coverage of behavioral and interactional issues that occur between provider and patient in everyday clinical practice. You will learn how to deliver bad news, how to conduct an effective patient interview, how to clinically manage behavioral issues in the dying patient, the principles of medical professionalism, behavioral issues in men's and women's health, and much more.
The color atlas of family medicine / editors, Richard P. Usatine ... [et al.] McGraw-Hill Medical 2009 WB17 C719 2009 Basic bookpic "This is what a modern textbook should be. It is concise yet comprehensive in the breadth of topics and, as the title suggests, robust with color photographs of extraordinarily good quality. "The editors state clearly in the preface that family physicians see a wide variety of conditions that lend themselves to an atlas such as this, and they support the pictures with evidence-based information, which makes this book so worthwhile and valuable. The editors and contributors balance the images and text, in an extremelyuseful way. "Although the title puts the focus on family physicians, the book clearly is a tremendous resource for all, including internal medicine practitioners, students, and those in every specialty who may only rarely encounter some of these conditions. The list of contributors is extensive and well balanced, bringing together experts from all specialties of medicine. "By far, this is one of the best, most useful textbooks I have seen in a very long time. It is a must for the library of every primary care physician." — Doody's Review Service
Diagnosis and management in primary care : a problem-based approach / edited by William C. W. Wong, Martin Lindsay & Albert Lee Chinese University Press 2008 W84.6 D5363 2008 Basic bookpic This book is to provide clincial students with some basic principles of diagnosis and management, medico-legal pitfalls and roles of evidence in primary care. Using practical examples, the authors describe clearly the whole mental process in coming to a clinical diagnosis, with emphasis on important signs or symptoms and investigations to look out for. The book should be of interest to advanced medical students in the clinical years (year 3 to 5) and novice clinicians who will be using history and physical examination skills in the clinical setting. The examples are realistic and inspiring and the analyses to them are succinct.
Differential diagnosis in primary care / Nairah Rasul, Mehmood Syed Wiley-Blackwell/BMJ Books 2009 WB39 R231d 2009 Basic bookpic Formulating a diagnosis purely on the basis of clinical judgement can be fraught with difficulty and danger, yet this is the challenge faced every day by Primary Care physicians, who rarely have access to the diagnostic tools available to hospital-based colleagues. Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care has been specifically written with the needs of the Primary Care physician in mind. It examines the potential causes of common presentations and aims to help the physician differentiate between diseases, using history and examination alone. Diseases are listed in descending order of prevalence, with the commonest causes first, while high-risk conditions are highlighted to ensure they are not overlooked. Its unique tabulated format ensures key information is easily accessible, and the user-friendly format ensures the book can be used during consultations, home visits, and on ward rounds. Whether used by the undergraduate, postgraduate trainee or the experienced Primary Care physician, Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care is an invaluable tool designed to improve the reader's ability to diagnose on the basis of clinical judgement alone.

Essentials of family medicine / [edited by] Philip D. Sloane ... [et al.] Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins 2008 WB110 E78 2008 Basic bookpic Reviewer: William Y. Huang, MD(Baylor College of Medicine) Description: This third edition is an update of a well-known introductory textbook of family medicine for medical students. Changes in this edition include rewritten chapters with more use of figures and tables, use of an evidence-based approach where possible, and the addition of new common problems. Purpose: The purpose is to provide a basic introductory reference to family medicine. Audience: The intended audience is third and fourth year medical students, residents, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Features: There are three main sections of the book: Principles of Family Medicine, Preventive Care, and Common Problems. The Principles of Family Medicine section discusses the life of the family physician, the scope of practice, and the need to consider the family in approaching individual patients. The second section, Preventive Care, describes preventive care at various stages of life from prenatal care to the care of the adult. The final section contains chapters on 30 common problems seen in family medicine. There is an appropriate mix of presenting conditions such as chest pain, and diseases, such as hypertension. Assessment: This remains a high quality introductory textbook of family medicine. It compares favorably with other introductory texts of family medicine in size and scope. The emphasis on an evidence-based approach is especially noteworthy and will make this edition useful to experienced family physicians as well as students and residents.
Ethical issues in cancer patient care / edited by Peter Angelos Springer 2007 W1 C16 v.140 2007 Advanced bookpic Reviewer: Becket Gremmels, BA(Saint Louis University Department of Health Care Ethics) Description: The contributors to this book deal with a variety of ethical issues related to the care of cancer patients in an accessible, nontechnical manner. Seven new chapters have been added to this second edition, and the remainder have been updated. The first edition was published in 1999. Purpose: The editor's aim is three-fold: to raise awareness of ethical issues, to help caregivers prepare themselves better for addressing these types of issues, and to persuade healthcare teams to take ethical conflicts seriously. While most chapters meet these goals, some arguments and expositions are not as sophisticated as they might be. Audience: The authors' varied backgrounds make the book, which is intended for physicians, nurses, students, educators and ethicists, accessible to a wide range of readers. While not written for patients, the inclusion of a cancer survivor as a contributor makes the book of interest to cancer sufferers and other patients who want to understand the perspectives of their caregivers. Features: Contributions cover such topics as patients' spiritual needs, the openness and communication between patients and physicians, determining medical errors and how best to disclose them, futility in oncology, ethics of human research, and others. Of particular note is a letter from a cancer survivor to physicians, relating his story and emphasizing the importance of the physician's demeanor when interacting with the patient. Assessment: The variety of authors, revision of old chapters, and the additionof seven new chapters all make this a significant improvement over the first edition. Contributors not only discuss ethical theories, but also provide practical steps and frameworks for implementing them at the bedside. Several competing viewpoints are not as intricately discussed as some might like, but the depth and breadth of content make up for this drawback.
Evidence-based diagnosis in primary care : practical solutions to common problems / editor Andrew Polmear ; foreword by Paul Glasziou Elsevier 2008 WB141 E932 2008 Basic bookpic This book has been prepared by professionals working in the UK and sets out the principles and practice of EBM in primary care diagnosis. Giving guidance on over 100 symptoms and disorders, the book illustrates the fundamental issues: that the value of a history, examination and investigation depends on the patient's prior probability of disease and on the setting and expertise of the doctor. Many chapters feature "red flags" - elements of the history or examination that should alert us to the possibility of serious disease, which are vital for general practice.
Family-oriented primary care / Susan H. McDaniel ... [et al.] ; foreword by David Satcher Springer 2005 WB110 M478f 2005 Basic bookpic Reviewer: Malek H Akhal, MD(Creighton University Medical Center) Description: Family-Oriented Primary Care in its second edition (the first edition was published in 1990) reinforces the idea of applying the biopsychosocial model for patient care. Specifically, it emphasizes the concept of utilizing "The Family" as a practical and efficient way of delivering healthcare. Purpose: The purpose of this book is to shed light on the well-rounded biopsychosocial approach and the utilization of "The Family" as a practical, complete and efficient way of delivering good quality healthcare. These objectives are worthwhile especially in an era of "super sub-specialization" and the ever increasing demands on and costs of the health sector. Readers of this book will find that the objectives are met. Audience: The book, as per the authors, is addressed not only to primary practitioners but extends beyond that to include interested specialists, students, and residents. The authors base the knowledge in this book on few evidence-based trials and on their personal experience with their patients. I largely agree on the target audience, although I doubt the interest of specialists in the subject matter. Features: The book covers all aspects of family-based primary care, including but not limited to, the pros of such approach, proper interviewing skills, and dealing with various clinical scenarios. The unique features of this book include the various real-life clinical encounters, tables, and diagrammatic illustrations. Assessment: In its second edition, "Family-Oriented Primary Care" isan updated and comprehensive book addressing the concept of biopsychosocial approach to healthcare and the utilization of "The Family" as the vector for delivering a complete, efficient, and good quality care. Compared to the first edition, it covers topics that apply to a bigger audience and has more evidence-based facts.
Health care informatics : a skills-based resource / Bill G. Felkey, Brent I. Fox, and Margaret R. Thrower American Pharmacists Association 2006 W26.5 F316h 2006 Advanced bookpic Reviewer: Thomas Jacobsen, Pharm.D., M.S., R.Ph.(GlaxoSmithKline) Description: This book describes the science of using information to improve healthcare. Purpose: The purpose is to provide healthcare workers instruction on how to understand and use technology in order to enhance their daily work flow. Audience: This is a multidisciplinary book written for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists, and other health professionals. Features: The 16 chapters cover the basics of informatics, more advanced topics, and the future of informatics. The authors approach each chapter with objectives and use a variety of activities to test readers' knowledge. Overall, the skills acquired by reading this book will make practitioners more efficient at using and retrieving information, which will ultimately benefit their practice. Assessment: This book provides an excellent overview for those looking to improve their skills in retrieving and using the most pertinent information needed in their practice. This would be a valuable addition to any healthcare library.
Lippincott's primary care. Orthopaedics / editors, Paul A. Lotke, Joseph A. Abboud, Jack Ende Wolters Kluwer/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Health 2008 WE39 L765 2008 Advanced bookpic Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP(Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences) Description: Books in the Lippincott's Primary Care series offer a hands-on approach to everyday problems encountered in the clinic. This one on orthopedic problems is a graphically intense, quick reference that makes the diagnosis and treatment options simple. Purpose: The stated goal is to present a primer and treatment guide for the most common musculoskeletal problems seen in primary care. As the diagnosis and treatment options have changed significantly over time, this is a most noble goal and the authors have done extremely well in meeting the challenge. Audience: This book is for everyone who practices in a primary care setting. The text is easy to understand and supplemented by many graphics, and it assumes little a priori knowledge of the subject or diagnosis. The authors are practicing clinicians who understand how to get to the point. Features: The series uses distinct markers for "Not to be Missed" and "When to Refer," which are extremely useful. In addition, the book includes access to a website that has a search function for the text, video clips for procedures, and downloadable patient information sheets. The illustrations, figures, and reproductions of radiologic studies are extremely good and are a major highlight of the book, as is the inclusion of the ICD-9 codes for different diagnoses. Assessment: This should be in every primary care medical library and physical therapy clinic. The patient aids are tremendous. This stands out from most orthopedics books focused onthe nonorthopedic practitioner.

Pharmacology for the primary care provider / Marilyn Winterton Edmunds, Maren Stewart Mayhew, with Christopher Bridgers Mosby 2009 QV38 E24p 2009 Basic bookpic This is a comprehensive pharmacology text designed foruse by primary care practitioners. The purpose is to provide basicmedical content integrated with pharmacological principles and nursingapproaches. The book includes journal and Internet resources to aidreaders in updating information for themselves, especially critical fordrug research, given the vast number constantly coming on the market. Although designed for all types of primary care providers, this bookis particularly directed at students and novice clinicians. However, the comprehensive nature of this text functions as an excellent reviewand update for experienced and seasoned clinicians. This book isorganized into two general sections. In the first the foundation foreffective and efficacious pharmacological practice is provided, whilein the second specific drug classes are covered. The first sectionincludes focus areas on prescriptive authority, basic drug mechanics, and important variations by age group or life change (e.g., pregnancy, nursing, and menopause). The environmental context within whichprescribing occurs is then presented, including evidence-basedmedicine, clinical trials, and critical decision-making. The firstsection concludes with application of drug information such as how todetermine clinical guidelines, patient education, and prescriptionwriting. In the second section there is a discussion of common drugcategories and the primary care conditions for which they are commonlyused. Whenever possible, drug prototypes are used to minimize needlessrepetition for similar drugs in the same class. I compared this bookto Youngkin's Pharmacotherapeutics: A Primary Care ClinicalGuide (Prentice Hall,1999), which is also designed for primarycare clinicians. Although a good text, it did not provide theenvironmental context as comprehensively as this text does. Drugclasses were described more generically without as much detail onspecific drugs. Overall, I would highly recommend this text be part ofevery primary care clinician's library.
Primary care : a collaborative practice / [edited by] Terry Mahan Buttaro ... [et al.] Mosby/Elsevier 2008 W84.6 P94912 2008 Advanced bookpic Reviewer: Kathleen M. Woodruff, RN, MS, CRNP(Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing) Description: This is the third edition of an evidence-based, clinical practice book. The first edition focused on collaboration as the hallmark for healthcare delivery. The second edition stressed the importance of evidence-based clinical practice. In this edition, the authors add new chapters and evaluate and revise other chapters. The final product is a current, up-to-date book presented from an evidence-based perspective. Purpose: The purpose of the third edition was to address comments about the previous edition and to insure the accuracy of the information. The authors have clearly met their stated objectives by producing a comprehensive and concise book. Audience: This is intended as a multidisciplinary resource for learning and practice primary care providers. The contributing authors are diverse and accomplished in the field of primary healthcare. Features: An exhaustive array of topics is covered. Major topics include primary care from adolescence through adulthood, office emergencies, health maintenance, infectious diseases, and common disorders organized according to body systems. Each chapter is structured with a consistent format. The chapters are organized in a systematic manner with a wide variety of tables and illustrations to clarify information. The index is comprehensive and complete. The front book flap presents the table of contents by disorder. Putting the ICD-9 codes by disorder on the back flap is a nice addition. Assessment: This is an excellent resource for primary care providers. Theinformation is up to date and supported by the research and it is presented in a clear and organized format. Primary care is continuously changing and as a result, evaluation and revision of books is essential. This third edition is important to maintain the availability of accurate and current primary care information.
Primary care medicine : office evaluation and management of the adult patient / [edited by] Allan H. Goroll, Albert G. Mulley Jr Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams & Wilkinss 2009 W84.6 P94916 2009 Basic bookpic Reviewer: Sholeh Vaziri, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine) Description: This is an updated reference book that provides an overview of primary care medicine. Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a source of practical information for use in clinical decision-making in the ambulatory setting. Although it is difficult to exhaustively cover such a topic, this book meets the goal of giving the reader concise, up-to-date guidelines in the treatment of adult patients. Given the recent surge of interest in primary care, this book is a much needed resource. Although there are other books that address this topic, the organization of information in this text makes it useful as a day-to-day reference, both during and after hours. Audience: The book is targeted to practitioners, but health care providers at many levels will find it useful. The authors represent their field well, and contributors provide information in specialty areas. Features: The problem-oriented focus emphasizes commonly encountered patient complaints. In addition to addressing diagnostic and treatment issues, the editors also discuss topics such as cost-effective care, estimating risks and benefits, and when to refer patients to a specialist. Although the book does not contain a large number of illustrations, there are some charts and tables that help to outline differential diagnoses and treatment plans. The references are up-to-date and include comments summarizing the content of each reference. This feature will save the reader time in searching for additional information. Assessment: This book is useful for the health careprofessional in primary care medicine. As an office text, the practitioner will find it a helpful tool in the daily management of adult outpatients.

Principles of ambulatory medicine / edited by Nicholas H. Fiebach ... [et al.] ; consulting editors, L. Randol Barker, Philip D. Zieve Lippincott Williams & Wilkins 2008 WX205 P957 2007 Basic bookpic Reviewer: Ann B. Nattinger, MD, MPH(Medical College of Wisconsin) Description: This is a comprehensive review of adult ambulatory medicine. It is an update of the previous edition, which was published in 1995. Purpose: As stated by the editors, the purpose is to provide guidance for the evaluation, management, and long-term course of common clinical problems addressed in the ambulatory setting, and for recognizing problems requiring specialist referral or hospitalization. I believe they succeed admirably in accomplishing these goals. Audience: The editors state that the intended audience is the office-based practitioner of internal medicine or family medicine. This book would also be helpful for residents or medical students on ambulatory rotations. Features: A wide variety of ambulatory topics are covered, mostly organized by subspecialty area. Each chapter includes discussion of epidemiology and pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. There are many helpful tables, and a nice emphasis on patient counseling and patient instructions. Some of the photographs could be clearer, but the diagrams are generally well done. The references have been updated to 1997 and are separated into general and specific references. References that are controlled trials, meta-analyses, or consensus-based recommendations are bolded. I especially liked the early chapters on general topics, such as prevention, geriatrics, adolescent medicine (including a guide to sports participation), and disability evaluation. Assessment: We practitioners of primary care adult medicine are fortunate to have two other major textbooksin the field. These are Goroll's Primary Care Medicine: Office Evaluation and Management of the Adult Patient, 3rd Edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1995), and Branch's Office Practice of Medicine, 3rd edition (W.B. Saunders, 1994). Although the others are also excellent references, this text compares well, particularly with respect to the evidence-based approach, tables, and patient counseling aspects. This text has fewer chapters than Goroll, but each is more comprehensive. At the risk of emphasizing my age, I also found the slightly larger type attractive.

Textbook of palliative medicine / edited by Eduardo Bruera ... [et al.] Distributed by Oxford University Press 2006 WB310 T355 2006 Basic bookpic Textbook of Palliative Medicine provides an alternative, truly international approach to this rapidly growing specialty. This textbook fills a niche with its evidence-based, multi-professional approach and global perspective ensured by the international team of editors and contributing authors. In the absence of an international 'curriculum' for the study of palliative medicine, this textbook provides essential guidance for those either embarking upon a career in palliative medicine or already established in the field, and the structure and content have been constructed very much with this in mind. With an emphasis on providing a service anywhere in the world, including the important issue of palliative care in the developing nations, Textbook of Palliative Medicine offers a genuine alternative to the narrative approach of its competitors, and is an ideal complement to them. It is essential reading for all palliative care physicians in training and in practice, as well as palliative care nurses and other health professionals in the palliative care team.
