Basic skills in interpreting laboratory data / [edited by] Mary Lee American Society of Health-System Pharmacists 2009 QY4 B312 2009 Basic bookpic This text familiarizes pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, as well as students, with the fundamentals of common lab tests used to screen for or diagnose disease, monitor the effectiveness and safety of treatment, or assess disease severity. Most of the tests discussed are performed in the clinical laboratory on blood or urine specimens, but some pulmonary function tests, cardiac tests, and other selected radiologic or diagnostic tests are also covered because of their importance in diagnosis or therapy. Each lab test is described in terms of its clinical uses, how the test relates to the pathophysiology of the disease, how to interpret test results, and causes of abnormal results. Learning objectives and b&w anatomical illustrations are included, and review charts summarize clinical information such as normal ranges, critical values, and signs and symptoms associated with abnormal test values. This fourth edition contains new chapters on lab tests for women's and men's disorders, and on pharmacogenomic testing. Lee teaches pharmacy practice at Chicago College of Pharmacy.
Cellular diagnostics : basic principles, methods and clinical applications of flow cytometry / editors, Ulrich Sack, Attila Tarnok, Gregor Rothe Karger 2009 QY95 C3934 2009 e-book Basic bookpic In the 37 chapters in this volume, Sack (Institute of Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine, U. of Leipzig, Germany) et al. present a comprehensive discussion of all aspects of flow cytometry in research settings and the clinic, for scientists, students, and lab technicians. Written by specialists in laboratory medicine, immunology, hematology, transfusion medicine, and other medical fields from Europe and the US, chapters describe the history of flow cytometry, principles of instrumentation, fluorescence techniques and measurements, cell sorting, data analysis, standards, controls, and clinical applications of immunophenotyping in a variety of diseases, including cancer and HIV. Others cover cell function analysis and the biology and immunophenotypic characterization of various cell types of the immune and hematopoietic systems and cells involved in angiogenesis or tissue repair. The volume is an updated English version of the 2006 German text Zellulare Diagnostik.
Clinical and diagnostic virology / Goura Kudesia, Tim Wreghitt Cambridge University 2009 WC39 C6403 2009 Basic bookpic This book describes key diagnostic features of viral illnesses and provides a practical guide to diagnostic techniques, antiviral medication, occupational health issues, infection control, and viral vaccines. The goal is to provide a resource for medical professionals to accurately make diagnostic and treatment decisions regarding viral illnesses. As a health professional and book aficionado, I have not come across a book which concisely and accurately teaches diagnosing viral illnesses. The authors have extensive knowledge of PCR and other molecular techniques. The authors contend that the book is for all healthcare professionals, and it is written clearly enough for this audience. This book finally provides a necessary guide to vast and confusing array of diagnostic tests.
Clinical applications of immunomics / Andras Falus, editor Springer 2009 QW525 C6407 2009 Basic bookpic This is the second volume in a series that will be dedicated to publishing advances in immunomics particularly those focusing on systemic and integrative approaches in basic and clinical immunology, immunoinformatics, and immunologically relevant instrumentation and high-throughput screening methods. Rapid improvement in accessibility to molecular databases as well as availability of high throughput genomic, proteomic, and other ‘omics’ methodologies are forcing a considerable shift in research and development strategies for biomedicine. Systems biology, a systematic study of complex interactions in biological systems, is currently closely related to the development and application of bioinformatics and biostatistics tools to genomic and proteomic data in clinical immunology, as well.
Clinical immunology & serology : a laboratory perspective / Christine Dorresteyn Stevens F.A. Davis 2010 QW540 S844c 2010 Basic bookpic Stevens (clinical laboratory sciences, Western Carolina U.) provides a textbook for clinical laboratory students and practicing laboratorians and other allied health professionals that introduces immunology principles and serology techniques commonly used in the laboratory. The text combines practical information about laboratory testing with discussion of the theory behind the testing. This edition incorporates new chapters on automated assays, emphasizing flow cytometry, and serology of bacterial infections; expanded chapters on fungal and parasitic infections and molecular techniques; and more case studies and illustrations. All chapters have been updated to include new information about the immune system and new treatments for immunological diseases.
Clinical laboratory hematology / Shirlyn B. McKenzie, J. Lynne Williams Pearson 2010 WH25 M478c 2010 Basic bookpic This comprehensive book of hematology and hemostasis comes with a CD-ROM containing an atlas of peripheral blood smears and free on-line access to a study guide. It replaces the Textbook of Hematology originally published by Lea & Febiger in 1988 and by Williams & Wilkins in 1996. The purpose was to develop a textbook attractive to "today's visually oriented student." The authors have passed all expectation in creating such a visually striking book and are to be commended for presenting hematology and hemostasis in a fresh new and visually appealing approach. The intended audience is clinical laboratory scientists - practicing or in training - as well as MT/MLT students. This book would also be very helpful to pathology or laboratory medicine residents, practicing pathologists, or any practicing physician interested in clinical hematology. This book is beautiful and the layout is striking. The use of color is superb, with the eye immediately drawn to subheadings, illustrative photomicrographs, and carve-out tables listing important facts.

Diagnostic hematology / Norman Beck Springer 2009 WH120 B393d 2009 e-book Basic bookpic Hematology is sometimes regarded as a purely laboratory subject, but is a clinical specialty in its own right. Understanding hematology requires insight into several distinct aspects: applied physiology, understanding the essential pathological processes of the blood, and the laboratory aspects. Nevertheless, there is no substitute for the clinical approach in the final assessment and management of any patient’s disease, of whatever nature, and therefore, independent of any diagnostic test, the final evaluation and judgment must come from the clinician. Diagnostic Hematology approaches the topic from the clinical decision-making perspective. It stresses the importance of effective, patient-centered care of hematological patients, requiring a comprehensive clinical insight into the disease processes, and thus provides an integrated clinical and pathological approach. Considerable emphasis is placed on obtaining the clinical history and examination, and the interpretation of the clinical patterns that are exposed from the ever increasing number of laboratory tests available. All the practical essentials are covered, ensuring that this book contains the vital clinical information needed by all physicians involved in hematological diagnoses.
ELISA guidebook / by John R. Crowther Humana 2009 QW525.5.E6 C953e 2009 e-book Advanced bookpic The Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) continues, as predicted, to be the predominant assay used in biomedical and agricultural research. While little has changed in the principles of the ELISAs used since the publication of The ELISA Guidebook, many technological advantages, including the increasing number of reagents available for exploitation and the larger spectrum of instruments to measure the coloured products of ELISAs, have greatly benefited the field. Other testing technologies using molecular techniques, predominantly the conventional and more and more often, real time PCR, are rapidly evolving to help diagnose and differentiate disease agents and identify substances present in exquisitely small amounts. The ELISA is still needed either alone in mass screening, such as serological assays, or used in tandem with molecular techniques to fully evaluate the molecular and antigenic nature of analytes.

Protein electrophoresis : protein, gel electrophoresis, alpha globulin / ed. by Lambert M. Surhone, Miriam T. Timpledon, Susan F. Marseken Betascript 2010 QY455 P967 2010 Basic bookpic High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! In medicine, protein electrophoresis (a.k.a. Immunoelectrophoresis) is a method of analysing a mixture of proteins by means of gel electrophoresis, mainly in blood serum (blood plasma is not suitable). Before the widespread use of electrophoresis gels, protein electrophoresis was performed on paper (sometimes in combination with paper chromatography). There are two classes of blood proteins: serum albumin and globulin. They are generally equal in proportion, but albumin is much smaller and lightly negatively charged, leading to an accumulation of albumin on the electrophoretic gel. A small band before albumin represents transthyretin (also named prealbumin). Some forms of medication or body chemicals can cause their own band, usually small. Abnormal bands (spikes) are seen in monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and multiple myeloma, and are useful in the diagnosis of these conditions.

Textbook of modern toxicology / edited by Ernest Hodgson Wiley 2010 QV600 H691t 2010 Basic bookpic While there are excellent general reference texts available in toxicology, and specialized monographs on particular subtopics, Hodgson's (toxicology, North Carolina State U.) continues to be one of the few textbooks available for use in upper-level undergraduate and graduate general toxicology courses, as well as those in environmental, pharmacological, medical and veterinary toxicology. The 29 chapters, contributed by 23 American academics and researchers, provide a general overview, followed by sections covering classes of toxicants, toxicant process in vivo, toxic action, organ toxicity, applied toxicology, environmental toxicology, and new approaches in the field. Incorporating recent advances in the molecular and integrative aspects of toxicology, the fourth edition includes new chapters on molecular methods, bioinformatics, and systems biology. The revised edition also includes new end-of-chapter questions and an online solutions manual for college instructors.
Tietz's applied laboratory medicine / Mitchell G. Scott, Ann M. Gronowski, Charles S. Eby Wiley 2007 QY25 T564 2007 Basic bookpic Sing a problem-based approach, Tietz's Applied Laboratory Medicine, Second Edition presents interesting cases to illustrate the current use and interpretation of the most commonly available clinical laboratory tests. The cases present detailed descriptions of the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. The book begins with an up-to-date general discussion of selection and use of laboratory diagnostic and prognostic tests. Cases are then grouped by category, including cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal, liver, gastrointestinal, endocrine, gynaecologic & obstetrical, haematological, CNS, lipid, congenital, toxicological, infectious, and autoimmune diseases. This book is an invaluable resource for all clinical chemists, clinical lab technologists, pathologists, and allied health professionals. It is also of interest for general practitioners, residents, medical students, and educators.
Tumor biomarker discovery : methods and protocols / edited by Michael A. Tainsky Humana 2009 QZ25 T9248 2009 e-book Advanced bookpic Through a variety of mechanisms, cancer cells provide the biomarker material that can lead to their own detection, which then grants clinicians the opportunity for non-invasive body fluid and tissue analysis able to indicate the presence of tumors or the level of tumor burden. In Tumor Biomarker Discovery: Methods and Prools, experts in the field present detailed chapters focused on the use and development of panels of biomarker analytes while covering subjects such as nucleic acids and protein-based technologies, metabolic profiling by analytic means or spectroscopy, as well as study designs for biomarker discovery and validation. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology? series format, chapters include brief introductions to the topics, lists of the necessary materials or reagents, step-by-step laboratory prools, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and authoritative, Tumor Biomarker Discovery: Methods and Prools is an ideal guide to the technologies that can be used to discover and validate tumor biomarker panels suitable for the presymptomatic early detection of cancer.
