[et al.], editors Springer 2013 WW270 A265 2013   Basic bookpic Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause for the loss of central vision beyond the age of 50 in industrial nations. Triplication of the number of affected patients is expected over the next 25 years. Especially over the last years the standard of knowledge regarding etiology, risk factors, diagnostics and therapy of this retina illness has substantially grown - this will be covered in this up-to-date multi-authored work. Apart from epidemiologically and genetically identified risk factors both the various pathophysiological aspects including the role of the complement system and clinical manifestations including OCT and angiographic characteristics are clearly represented. Furthermore, the different therapeutic approaches are presented and discussed, including proven procedures such as intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy and seeing-aid systems, in addition to the latest and upcoming methods in the area of pharmacology. 12 OCT in AMD : optical coherence tomography in age-related macular degeneration : annual report of the French Ophthalmic Society / Gabriel Coscas ... [et al.] Springer Medizin Verlag 2009 WW270 O209 2009   e-book Advanced bookpic Rapid or even dramatic progress has been made in the field of AMD over recent years, leading to a constant revision of basic concepts. A wide range of fundus imaging modalities are now available, and this book explains the respective value of each technique. The information provided by OCT is presented logically by comparison with plain films, autofluorescence, fluorescein angiography, or indocyanine green angiography. Meticulous biomicroscopic examination of macular changes and the essential value of fluorescein angiography for the detection of anatomical alterations of the macula and for precise evaluation of lesions and their course by indocyanine green angiography have naturally led the author Gabriel Coscas to analyze the new data provided by OCT. 16 Retinal and choroidal angiogenesis / edited by J.S. Penn Springer 2008 WW270 R4384 2008   Basic bookpic Retinal and choroidal angiogenesis are the leading causes of irreversible vision loss in developed countries. For this reason, ocular angiogenesis is an intensely studied process, and the field is advancing at an astounding pace. It has become increasingly difficult to manage the vast amount of information generated by the growing group of interested investigators, thus a resource is needed that distills and summarizes our progress to date. Additionally, novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of ocular angiogenesis are discussed, as are the unique challenges presented by delivery of drugs to the eye. Retinal and Choroidal Angiogenesis emphasizes basic principles rather than specific experimental results, although recently acquired data is frequently cited to illustrate points of broader theoretical significance. The result is a reference work appealing to ophthalmologists interested in clinical applications, as well as to basic scientists interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis, both in the context of ocular and non-ocular conditions. 17 Retinal angiography and optical coherence tomography / edited by J. Fernando Arevalo Springer 2009 WW270 R438045 2009   e-book Advanced bookpic This superbly practical book has been written by expert authors and is an ideal resource for clinicians seeking practical "how-to" information on OCT. OCT is a relatively new imaging technique that is becoming increasingly popular among ophthalmologists in both private and academic settings. Imaging has been a slow moving area in ophthalmology for some time, but now OCT is providing another, more detailed source of demonstrable change in the eye, in diagnostic, therapeutic or post-surgical setting. OCT and ultrasound both measure advancing disease states and post-surgical healing. The difference is that OCT shows more subtle changes, particularly post-surgically. From Books In Print

[et al.] APCell/ Elsevier 2014 QU325 S82475 2014   Advanced bookpic Stem Cells to Model and Treat Disease' provides in-depth and up-to-date reviews on the myriad ways that stem cells are being used to better understand and treat human disease. This publication offers essays from leaders in the stem cell field on some of the most important questions being faced in clinics and research labs, including the safety and efficacy of stem cell treatments, the use of stem cells to regenerate organs, the use of reprogrammed stem cells to model and treat disease, and the use of stem cells in clinical applications such as HIV disease and stroke. 24 The retina and its disorders / editors, Joseph C. Besharse, Dean Bok Elsevier/Academic Press 2011 WW270 R43842 2011   Basic bookpic This selection of articles from the Encyclopedia of the Eye covering retina, optics/optic nerve and comparative topics constitutes the first reference for scientists, post docs, and graduate students with an interest beyond standard textbook materials. It covers the full spectrum of research on the retina - from the basic biochemistry of how nerve cells are created to information on neurotransmitters, comparisons of the structure and neuroscience of peripheral vision systems in different species, and all the way through to injury repair and other clinical applications. The first single volume to integrate comparative studies into a comprehensive resource on the neuroscience of the retinaChapters arecarefully selected from the "Encyclopedia of the Eye" by one of the world's leading vision researchersThe best researchers in the field provide their conclusions in the context of the latest experimental results" From Books In Print
25 Trends in stem cell biology and technology / Hossein Baharvand, editor Humana 2009 QU325 T7942 2009   e-book Advanced bookpic Stem cells, characterized by the ability to both self-renew and to generate diff- entiated functional cell types, have been derived from the embryo and from va- ous sources of the postnatal animals and human. The recent advances in stem cell research have led to a better understanding of self-renewal, maintenance, and diff- entiation of both embryonic and somatic stem cells. This has significantly increased our knowledge of cellular and developmental biology in general and will certainly continue to do so for a long time to come. Moreover, given their role in maintaining and replenishing tissues, stem cells represent a potential means of restoring tissue function and thereby treating the root cause of degenerative disease. Therefore, in parallel, we need to improve our cognizance of the challenges involved in applying stem cells in clinical settings. From Books In Print
