Bioengineering of the skin : skin biomechanics / edited by Peter Elsner ... [et al.] CRC 2002 WR102 B61546 2002 Advanced bookpic From Doody Review Services Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Stanford University Medical Center) Description: This is an extremely technical, comprehensive discussion on skin biomechanics written at a level that would require an engineering background. Researchers who study diseases such as scleroderma, mucopolysaccharidoses, and cutis laxa may find this book a welcome addition to their library. The chapters exhaustively cover in excruciating detail how to measure the elasticity, tensile strength, collagen, and other skin mechanics. The devices used to make these measurements are schematically diagrammed and explained. Purpose: The purpose is to provide current information on noninvasive methods to assess skin biomechanics. These goals are met. Audience: The book is appropriate for skin researchers only. A strong mathematical and engineering background is necessary to understand the information. Features: The book includes tables of reference values for normal skin distensibility, elasticity, and relaxation; product testing for moisturizers; the parameters one would measure to assess antiaging products, and the measuring principles and components of measuring devices, including the ballistometer, the elastometer, the microindentometer, the cutometer. Some of these devices require computer software to operate. This aspect of utilization is not addressed in the book. Assessment: Researchers who must evaluate changes in the biomechanical properties of skin would find this book fascinating and very useful ,or they may already know most of the information and find it a good reference to look up and confirm facts.
Bioengineering of the skin : water and the stratum corneum / edited by Joachim Fluhr ... [et al.] CRC 2005 WR102 B6155 2005 Advanced bookpic From the Publisher Skin bioengineering is an expanding field of investigative and clinical dermatology. This second edition of the popular Bioengineering of the Skin: Water and Stratum Corneum focuses on a dramatically improved understanding of skin physiology based on a large number of recent publications. It explains the mechanisms involved in stratum Corneum barrier function and stratum Corneum hydration and brings up-to-date all research on epidermal water and transepidermal water loss in health and disease. All chapters are thoroughly revised and new chapters have been added on hydration and itching. This volume includes new guidelines on the standardization of measurements. Synopsis Prefacing a volume reflecting a decade of progress in the field of dermatology since the first edition, Fluhr (Friedrich-Schiller-U., Jena, Germany) notes that understanding of the function of the stratum corneum has changed from it being considered an inert interface between the body and the environment to a biologically active membrane with hydration as well as barrier functions. The first of the 32 chapters contributed by international scientists from academia and industry treat the special relationship between the epidermis and lipids that form a lipid-water phase. Succeeding chapters present problems associated with skin water loss; new guidelines for assessing skin physiology; and bioengineered methods used in experimental, clinical, and commercial applications. Detailed instructions are given on conducting product testing. Annotation c2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Color atlas of cosmetic dermatology / Marc R. Avram ... [et al.] McGraw-Hill 2007 WR17 C7192 2007 Basic bookpic Doody Review Services Reviewer:Kathleen E. Kramer, MD(Stanford University) Description:This atlas aims to provide information and photographs on many of the cosmetic techniques practiced by dermatologists today. Purpose:In a succinct yet complete manner, the techniques, instructions, side effects, and management of the patient are discussed. There is a lot of literature on these subjects, but usually scattered. It is very helpful to have all of this presented in one volume and in an unbiased manner, and mindful of side effect profiles. Audience:The book is written for anyone who performs, or plans to perform, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. It would be useful for physicians as well as physician extenders in a dermatologist's or plastic surgeon's office. Dermatology or plastic surgery residents would also find this helpful. Even patients, contemplating a procedure, would find the descriptions and photos elucidating. The authors are authorities in this field. Features:Chapters are arranged by disease or problem, i.e., pigmentation or vascular alterations. Within each chapter specific disorders are addressed. Cosmetic techniques for improvement are outlined and detailed, step-by-step instructions, side effects, and management of the patient are presented with each. The book is replete with good quality photos and tables. It is easy to read, straightforward and complete. However, the editing was not too careful and there are several misidentified photos and typos. Assessment:This atlas provides clear, succinct, information about several minimally invasive cosmetic techniques that would be very useful in the office of anyonewho performs these techniques or who discusses them with patients. I found the book fascinating and could not put it down until I had read it cover-to-cover.
Cosmeceuticals / edited by Zoe Diana Draelos Elsevier Saunders 2005 WR650 C8347 2005 Basic bookpic Doody Review Services Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Stanford University Medical Center) Description: Finally, a book discussing the merits of cosmetic skin care products based on scientific data has been published. The purpose of the various ingredients used in moisturizers, shampoo, botanicals, antioxidants, etc. is explained. Purpose: The purpose is to make dermatologists knowledgeable about the various cosmetic products available and to make educated recommendations for patients. Audience: The audience is dermatologists. Features: Clear analysis of the different strategies used to treat hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, increase collagen production, xerosis, etc., is presented. The authors are careful to be noncommittal in making specific recommendations. I wish they would have mentioned their preferences and stated that this was their impression. There are some photographs in the book that do not really impart any useful information. There is a photo of a jumble of upside down moisturizing products with the caption below stating "many products contain mineral oil." I wish they would have commented whether they thought Stivectin really has any effect rather than limiting the discussion to how it is supposed to interact with the tissues. Some of the chapters are rather short, 2 pages, leaving me longing for a more in-depth coverage. Assessment: All in all, I enjoyed the book and think that anyone with a cosmetic patient population would find reading it educational. It is quite informative compared to other books on the subject without bogging the reader down with bioengineering equations. I look forward to the next edition.
Cosmetic and clinical applications of botulinum toxin / William J. Lipham SLACK 2004 QW630.5.B2 L764c 2004 Advanced bookpic Doody Review Services Reviewer: Jeffrey S Rosenthal, m.d. (Bridgeport Hospital) Description: This is an excellent primer for those interested in the use of botulinum and tissue fillers of the facial region. The book covers products in use and those on the horizon. Purpose: The author's intent is to familiarize the reader with the basic uses of botulinum toxin and dermal tissue fillers by providing clear guidelines and helpful advice along with a clinical setting appropriate for the use of these products. New applications that expand the scope of botulinum are addressed along with guiding principles for treating lines generated by active or dynamic facial expression and static wrinkles associated with the skin aging process. This book is a valuable reference source containing easy to assimilate information without the pretext of being the beginning or end to this subject. Nor is it meant to preclude further investigatory work along with didactic sessions in a clinical setting. Audience: The editor is an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon who writes the majority of the botulinum chapters and calls upon fellow ophthalmic plastic surgeons to round out the remainder of the text. The purpose and overall effect of this book is to educate all comers. Although not specifically targeted for any one group, it furnishes supportive information to the established clinical practitioner and assists the newly burnished ophthalmic and plastic surgical physician, as well as those wishing to administer these products, with much fodder for thought. Features: The early chapters (1-7) bring the reader through the history of botulinum toxin, relevant facial muscular anatomy necessary for the toxin injections, basic physiology regarding the interaction of the toxin, nerve, and muscle axis and clinical applications as well as off-label uses of botulinum toxin. Finally, the ultimate two chapters describe currently available cosmetic tissue fillers and their application along with dermal filler agents looming on the shoals of the FDA approval list. All chapters are clearly written and are accompanied by visual aids that further clarify the author's message. The presentation is linear, first bringing the reader through basic didactic information and then demonstrating the clinical relevance of both botulinum toxin and tissue fillers. Those with prior experience in the realm of substances that produce muscular paralysis and/or tissue fillers used to provide a smoother or fuller visage can read through the essentials of this book in a timely manner. Assessment: This book, as intended by the author, is a very useful guide that will assist physicians in avoiding some of the pitfalls that one encounters when delving into this area. It is a well thought out presentation that will afford the reader a positive encounter.

The Asian skin : a reference colour atlas of dermatology / edited by Goh Chee Leok, Chua Sze Hon, Ng See Ket McGraw-Hill 2005 WR17 A8322 2005 Advanced bookpic From The Publisher "Asians comprise a diverse group of people from South Asia, which includes Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines) and North Asia ( Japan, Korea, and China). In these regions, the Fitzpatrick skin types III, IV, and V predominate." "Similar dermatoses involving the Asian skin often take on a slightly different clinical appearance from those affecting the Caucasian skin which is predominantly Fitzpatrick skin types I and II. This is mainly due to the inherent differences in melanin content and its distribution in the different races." This comprehensive atlas of dermatology contains more than 1,000 high-quality clinical photographs on dermatoses affecting the Asian skin. Conditions unique to Asians are well illustrated in this atlas. This compilation will undoubtedly serve as a valuable reference atlas and an essential companion to the dermatology textbook to all dermatologists managing patients of Asian descent. Doody Review Services Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Stanford University Medical Center) Description: Asian Skin is a color atlas of skin diseases. Since the authors are from Singapore, all the patients photographed are Asian. However, the diseases discussed are not unique to Asians and most of the skin abnormalities do not look clinically significantly different in Asians. There is a short clinical description and therapeutic statement accompanying each photograph. Some of the photographs are not high enough in quality to see the details of lesions, for example in leprosy, Hailey-Hailey disease, pseudoxanthoma elasticum. Purpose: The purpose is to educate physicians in diagnosing dermatologic conditions in Asians by providing a color reference. Audience: The audience is physicians and dermatology residents. Features: The best feature is the number of photographs and the range of skin abnormalities covered. Aside from the tendency of Asian skin to hyperpigment I would have liked to have seen more of a discussion on how Asian skin looks different with particular conditions versus non-Asian skin. Assessment: There are many good clinical color atlases available and this will join that number.
